Mike Bird

Sound

PROFILE

Mike started his career at the BBC in Bristol as part of the Audio Unit and he covered all sound operations involved in radio and video/film programme making, working on a variety of programmes ranging from natural history to radio drama and generally being involved in all stages of program making from the rehearsal room to the final dub.

Quick to learn new disciplines and equipment and with a deep understanding of the underlying skills involved in audio and video production, whether that be on a small documentary shoot or a large OB like Springwatch where he ran the video, sound, mini cams and comms operation for a location.

As a BBC Sound Supervisor/Recordist, Sound Assistant or Boom Op, his experience covered all types of sound operations and recordist work, across all genres. Inside and outside of the studio or on OBs and single camera operations (including film drama), this experience has included Sound Mixing and Sound Supervision, Pole/Boom and Fisher Boom work, news gathering, radio mics, comms and also music PA systems.

EXPERIENCE: Employment
1982 -
1992
Audio Unit
BBC Bristol
In my ten years at BBC Bristol, my continual training in broadcasting covered a very wide area of experience in Radio and Film/Television sound, in the studio, on location and on OB’s. It gave me the platform to continually acquire new skills and knowledge, in technique and the technology connected with broadcasting as well as the artistic side of program making.
